Pantanal, the Brazilian wetlands

Located on the central-west region of Brazil, this immense area of more than 140,000 km2 covers the states of Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul. A Land where nature is on its most unespoiled state.

Pantanal is a refuge for the most variety of flora and fauna Sylvester revealing what Brazil has to offer of the most pure: Its nature and its people.

Fishing is one of the most important activities of the region. The Paraguay river is the dorsal spine of this biosphere that's home for about 80,000 species of mammals, 650 birds, 263 different fishes and 50 reptiles.

The region is also know for its daily life related to cattle ranching with gigantic farms. Some farms became hotel farms, receiving tourists from all over the world year round.

Horseback ridding, hiking, radical sports, fishing, bird watching and photographic safaris are some of the activities to explore in the Pantanal.

The seasons of the Pantanal

Pantanal has two seasons during the year: The Wet and the Dry seasons. The wet season starts in January when slowly the volume of water of rivers and bays begin to grow until they reach the peak in June and flood the river banks and low lands of the region. During this season the corixos (creeks) receive an abundance of fish attracting migratory birds that come in search of food . The next season is the dry season when rivers, creeks and bays start to disappear bringing back the once submerged vegetation. The dry season starts in July and it lasts until the next rainy season in the end of December.

The distances between the cities of the Pantanal are great and the attractions of the area are very diversified. Pantanal is actually divided in two touristy zones. The best way to explore it is to one zone at a time.

Balneario do Sol, crystal clear waters
Pantanal North

The Pantanal North includes the cities of Cuiaba, Caceres, Pocone, Barao de Melgaco and Chapada dos Guimaraes. Even though Chapada dos Guimaraes is not located in the wetlands due to its archeological importance and its beauty is well worth the visit.

Cuiaba is the starting point when visiting the North, the airport is only 3 miles from downtown and the city itself offers a great infra-structure. From Cuiaba special tourism buses depart to the most visited natural attractions of the region .

Caceres is located about 135 miles from Cuiaba where the Amazon Forest meets the cerrado and the wetlands., well know for its International Fishing Festival.

Pocone is where the Transpantaneira begins, a highway connecting it to the City of Porto Jofre filled with rich fauna and flora.

Located in Pocone is also the Parque Nacional do Pantanal Mato-Grossense, (Pantanal National Park) that can only be visited with Ibama authorization. (The Brazilian Environment Institute) The Park can only be reached by boat from the city of Porto Jofre.

Chapada dos Guimaraes is a must see attraction, only 42 miles from Cuiaba, easy access year around, and a very interesting set of rock formations, a 2700 feet high waterfall and the Echo Wall, a place to have fun listening to your own voice. Chapada is also home of some 46 archeological sites with painting of pre-historic animals and fossils.

Pantanal South and Bonito

The Pantanal South is the home of the City of Campo Grande as well as Coxim, Rio Verde de Mato Grosso, Aquidauana, Miranda, Corumba and the Bodoquena highlands. Serra da Bodoquena covers three very interesting places such as Bonito with its crystal clear waters and caves, Jardim e Bodoquena with their beautiful waterfalls.

The gateway for the Pantanal South is the city of Campo Grande, slightly larger than Cuiaba capital of the northern neighboring state. Campo Grande also offers plenty of museums, restaurants and hotels.

Rio Verde located about 125 miles from Cuiaba is perfect for place for those that enjoy more radical sports, such as rock climbing, whitewater rafting and a rich place to observe many animals living in harmony with nature.

Coxim is called the waters paradise because of its beautiful waterfalls, located 148 miles from Campo Grande, just after Rio Verde.

Bonito is the main attraction of the Pantanal South. The transparent waters of the Sucuri River provided the perfect setting for observation of the underwater fauna and flora. A small village with a few inhabitants is rapidly becoming well know all over the world. A place to see thousands of colorful freshwater fishes and relax floating away in the Municipal Balneario.

Gruta do Lago, is another attraction worth visiting on the Bonito area, a 300 feet deep cave discovered by Indians of the Terena Tribe in 1924 that ends in a lake of indiscernible blue waters. The lake is approximately 270 feet deep.
